Welcome to the first official MFL Playoffs recap thread, this week kicked off the playoff season for the MFL and for the first time in league history (thanks to Dr. Dark constantly pestering Danny for a late season rule change) 8 teams entered this year's playoffs with a chance to become this year's MFL Champ, but after this week only 4 teams were able to keep their championship aspirations alive for another week while the other 4 teams were left behind to fight each other in the Consolation bracket in order to determine their final spot in the MFL standings.
#1 Free Josh Gordon (Dusty) vs. #8 The Fighting Kittens (Smoke/SmokeTNT)
The Fighting Kittens picked up the third-highest player point total in the league this week from Eli Manning (28.00), taking down Free Josh Gordon 96.00 to 78.00. This win avenges a 101.28 to 94.68 comeback by Free Josh Gordon back in Week 10. Free Josh Gordon ended the regular season with a record of 10-4, good for first place. When considering points per game, they ranked slightly worse (second with 104.97). Free Josh Gordon will start their vacation earlier than they hoped, as they lost their only postseason game.
#2 Go Blue Girl (Joanna) vs. #7 Dark's Dragons
Go Blue Girl got the second-highest point total of the week from Odell Beckham Jr. (30.30) to pummel Dark's Dragons 121.70 to 68.62. Go Blue Girl has done a good job of putting teams away early, collecting five blowout wins on the year. Someone check the temperature of Go Blue Girl. They've been on fire, winning their last five matchups in a row. This beatdown was sweeter than most, serving as revenge for a Week 10 101.70 to 94.60 upset loss to Dark's Dragons. Adding insult to injury, Dark's Dragons had a starter score zero points (Andre Johnson). Dark's Dragons ended the regular season in seventh place with a record of 7-7. Perhaps benefiting from some good fortune, they ranked just 11th in the league in scoring average at 82.55 points per game. Dark's Dragons was bounced early this postseason, losing in their only playoff matchup.
#3 Grave Robbers (Girl Graves) vs. #6 Rock Terror (CA Bain)
Grave Robbers picked up 20.28 points from Andrew Luck and 19.00 from the Buffalo Bills Defense to get the win over Rock Terror 102.28 to 87.58. This is a repeat performance for Grave Robbers over Rock Terror, after a 168.90 to 105.28 shellacking in Week 8. Rock Terror finished the regular season in sixth place with a record of 8-6. With a scoring average of 96.28, they also placed sixth in the league in that metric. This postseason, Rock Terror was sent home quickly, losing in their only playoff game.
#4 MadMan Gamers (MadMan Gamer/Tav7623) vs. #5 Free Adrian Peterson (Jerry)
Free Adrian Peterson was no match for Matt Ryan (26.10) and the Kansas City Chiefs Defense (16.00) as MadMan Gamers walked away with a 97.80 to 72.26 victory. This win was sweeter than most, serving as revenge for a Week 5 110.06 to 108.94 heartbreaking loss to Free Adrian Peterson. Free Adrian Peterson wrapped up the regular season in fifth place with a record of 8-6. In terms of scoring average, they ranked slightly better (fourth with 101.97). Free Adrian Peterson will start their vacation earlier than they hoped, as they lost their only postseason game.
Round 2 Matchups
Championship Bracket:
#8 The Fighting Kittens vs. #4 MadMan Gamers - The Cinderella Game (See Additional Commentary)
#3 Grave Robbers vs. #2 Go Blue Girl
Consolation Bracket:
#1 Free Josh Gordon vs. #5 Free Adrian Peterson
#6 Rock Terror vs. #7 Dark's Dragons
Additional Playoff Commentary:
Each year (especially around March) most sports fans often hear about a Cinderella team, which is often a under the radar team that fought adversity and despite the odds made it to (and in some cases won) the big championship game. This year in the MFL we essentially have two potential Cinderella's in waiting fighting for a chance to make it to the MFL Championship game. There is The Fighting Kittens who due to a perfect storm of events in the last couple of weeks of the season managed to make it into the championship bracket on the last week of the season with a 6-8 record (for the second year in a row I might add) and then in round 1 of the playoffs they managed to boot 3 time reigning MFL Champ, #1 seed, and all round MFL beast Free Josh Gordon from the Championship bracket. Then there's MadMan Gamers, who managed to turn things around this year ending the regular season with a 8-6 record after having a horrible 2013 season in which they finished dead last in the league with 3 wins and (a then league record) 11 losses. Later this week both of these teams will face off against each other to see which "Cinderella" team will get to advance to the MFL Championship game and play for the championship against the winner of Grave Robbers vs. Go Blue Girl. Who will win? Will The Fighting Kittens potentially get a chance to avenge last year's round 1 playoff loss to Go Blue Girl in the MFL Championship game or will MadMan Gamers continue to be this year's equivalent of the 2013 Boston Red Sox? Well sports fans tune in to next week's MFL Playoffs recap thread to find out!
