I'm a big fan of scary/horror video games, so I was happy to see that the October issue of Game Informer magazine (yes, I still get/read magazines) was going to be a "horror" related issue and decided to create a discussion/"preview" thread about it, but without "spoiling" too much of what's in the magazine just in case any one out there has gotten it (but hasn't read it yet) or plans to get it.
This year's October issue of Game Informer Magazine, dubbed "The Horror Issue" mainly covers October's big horror related gaming releases which this year happens to be Alien: Isolation, a first person horror experience done in the vein as an Outlast or an Amnesia: The Dark Decent and Resident Evil creator Shinji Makami's upcoming game The Evil Within, a third person shooter/psychological horror experience. Both games in recent months have been seeing increased interest due in part to their horror "pedigree" and this issue takes a deeper look at the different aspects of both of these game.
This issue also features a delightful article taking a brief glance at upcoming horror themed video games, some of which look very promising like Overkill Studio's (the people behind the Payday games) FPS take on The Walking Dead, Sony's PS4 exclusive Until Dawn (a third person survival horror game where you play as one of eight teenagers who are trapped at a remote cabin and are being stalked by a serial killer), Konami's Silent Hills, and Soma (a first person sci-fi horror game by the team behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent) to name a few.
The last big horror themed article in this issue was of course their picks for the top 25 horror games which had some obvious picks such as The Suffering, Silent Hill 2, Dead Space, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Fatal Frame 2,etc. but it also had a few surprising picks as well, some of which I had never heard about before such as Blood (Monolith Production's "tongue in cheek" Doom clone that pays homage to classic horror films like Evil Dead 2 & The Shining), I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (a point & click adventure game based off of a Harlan Ellison short story), and Sanitarium (an isometric adventure game set in an insane asylum) to name a few. While I agree with most of their picks there were a few that I really disagreed with (Manhunt, for one and picking the first Dead Space over it's sequel was just ludicrous imo as 2 was imo the superior game) and was also a little shocked that they omitted some (imo) horror classics like Onimusha Warlords, Aliens vs. Predator (the 2000 FPS classic....not the 2010 one), Outlast, and Parasite Eve.
