Sometimes writing a movie review can be the easiest thing (especially if you know what you want to say and how you want to say it) and then there are times where writing one can be a pain in the butt especially if you are trying to be as spoiler free as possible. For me The World's End (the third film in the Cornetto trilogy which also consists of Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz) falls in the latter category mainly because of how strongly I feel about certain aspects of the movie which strongly ties into the movie's plot. Now for those of you who don't know The World's End (Co-Written & Directed by Edgar Wright) is about five school buddies (played by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, and Martin Freeman) who get back together and return to their home town in order to finish the local infamous bar crawl called " The Golden Mile" (12 bars...12 pints which ends at the titular World's End) that they had failed to complete 20 years earlier, after a while they start to realize that something is not right about the town and getting to the World's End becomes the least of their worries.
Pros: Good acting, cinematography, decent writing and editing....also there are imo some really awesome looking fight scenes, there is especially one where Nick Frost (aka Ed from Shaun of the Dead) looks like a total Kung Fu movie badass.
Cons: Towards the end there is imo WAY too much lens flare type effects (there is enough to give JJ Abrams a stiffy), Simon Pegg goes against type and plays a total douche bag (don't get me wrong his performance is pretty fucking brilliant, but I just fucking hate his character and I mean REALLY FUCKING HATE his character...though I will say I did like a few of the bits with his character especially the one at the very very very end), and there are some obvious CGI special & visual effects (it looked like there was some weird motion blur effects added during some of the fight scenes) that kind of took me out of the movie.
In the end giving this movie a score was really difficult as the things I disliked while minimal (I basically didn't like 3 things and two of them weren't really major things) really had a deep effect on my overall enjoyment of the movie (Simon Pegg's character at times almost got me to Rob Zombie Halloween 2 levels of pissed off....and for those of you who are new here a few years back I posted a fairly lengthy tirade/rant (not my best moment I admit) in AJAX's Halloween 2 thread about how much I fucking hated that movie....just the mere thought of it pisses me off) that I didn't really think it deserves anything higher than a 5 out of 10. With that said it's still a pretty good movie overall (but it is imo the weakest of the Cornetto Trilogy movies) that pays homage to 60's sci-fi movies (especially one particular movie which I won't say cause spoilers) and has pretty much everything you'd come to expect from an Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost movie. If you can withstand (or look past) Pegg's asshole character I think you'll probably end up enjoying this movie a lot more than I did.
