Hey everyone tav here with another movie review this week I will be reviewing the 2006 slasher flick Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon starring Scott Wilson, Nathan Baeset, Angela Goethals, Robert Englund, and the late Zelda Rubenstein. I had heard about this movie again from a horror podcast back in 2008 and it wasn't until last year when I finally got to see this movie off of Netflix Instant Watch. This movie is about a documentary crew that arrives in a small town to document an aspiring serial killer who models himself after slasher legends Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger as he plans his first major killing spree while donning the guise of a dead local legend come back to life to avenge his murder at the hands of the towns folk.
Pros: Interesting take on slasher films in that it goes "behind the scenes" to "explain" how slasher movie killers do the "seemingly" supernatural things they do, has Robert Englund playing against type as Doc Halloran the Dr. Loomis to Leslie Vernon's Michael Myers,
is a self aware slasher ala Scream (and just like Scream it has references to Carpenter's Halloween), practical special effects, Kane Hodder makes a brief cameo appearance, brief nudity (and a great little line to go with it " What kind of a ***** girl hops on the nerdy kid's johnson like it's a pogo stick?" ) and some decent acting.
Cons: Criminal misuse of Robert Englund.....he only appears for approx 10 to 15 mins of the 92 minute run time, barely speaks, his character is a push over, and Englund plays the part very subdued (Note to Filmmakers: If you are going to cast Robert Englund against type in a slasher/horror movie at least keep him on screen for more than 15 mins and for fucks sake let him ham it up/chew some scenery for a little bit.....like Anthony Hopkins did as Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula, so that we the audience can at least have some fun watching your movie instead of making fun of it........), there is not a lot of gore/inventive kills (except for the last one which is telegraphed at about the half way point.... which come to think of it sucks as well), and there are too many annoying slasher movie stereotypes hanging around who's only reason for being there is for the most part to as Leslie puts it "pad the body count".
Overall I give this movie a 7.5 out of 10 because it is a fresh and interesting take on the slasher genre, has some decent acting, and a decent script. The only things bringing down this movie is the misuse of a horror icon best know for his comedic tongue in cheek quips and scenery chewing, a lack of interesting kills, and the use of too many annoying and shallow slasher movie victim stereotypes. I recommend this movie for people who are avid fans of slasher movies or those who are looking for a fresh and unique prospective in their slasher movies.
I hoped ya'll liked my review and I just thought I'd give you guys a heads up that I'm planning on calling in with my first review to the show (... with a purposely bad Joe Bob Briggs impression complete with drive in totals ......for this movie only) sometime in the next week or two......I have already picked out a specific movie (and I have a feeling most of ya'll will definitely like it.....especially if you like films that hearken back to the 70's/80's exploitation/slasher movies) and I plan on having a more detailed version of the review posted up here on the forums shortly after the episode is released.
