Hey guys, tav here with another movie review this time I will be reviewing one of the Ghost House Underground low budget releases of the cheesy low budget zombie flick Dance of the Dead. I first heard about this movie through one of the many horror podcast I had started to listen to way back in 2008 and decided to check it out based on their recommendations. Dance of the Dead is the tale of a group of high school kids trying to survive the night when a zombie outbreak occurs on the night of their senior prom.
Pros: Like last week’s film this film has plenty of gore/ awesome special effects, has some funny moments (A character sticks a baseball bat through a hole in a zombies stomach, crawls between its legs, gets up and grabs the bat from the other side of the zombie and then hits the zombie in the head with it) , takes inspiration from Night of the Living Dead (cemetery scene in a muscle car, Slow zombies, people trapped in a multi story house surrounded by zombies, contains some social commentary), Return of the Living Dead 1&2( Talking zombies….who say BRAINS, Driving zombies), Class of Nuke ‘em High (zombies created by chemical waste from nearby nuclear power plant) 28 Days later( Running zombies…yes this film has both fast and slow zombies as well as flying zombies….watch the graveyard scene and you will know what I’m talking about ), Shaun of the Dead (A loser gets off his ass and tries to get back with the girl he lost) ,Re- Animator ( Zombie carries head, pursues chick throughout movie with intent to go down on her….literally ), Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore ( self explanatory ….cemetery scenes….groundskeeper ), this movie also introduces a few new and interesting twists on the zombie movie that I just won’t ruin here.
Cons: To many John Hughes high school stereotypes (dumb jock, asshole teachers/coaches, stoners, bad boy musicians, dumb cheerleader, slacker, geeks, and a peppy/bossy class vice president), zombie on zombie action (trust me this is not as cool as it sounds), tries to mesh to many different types of zombies into one movie / contradicts some well known zombie movie rules (Fast and Slow Zombies in one movie, destroying the brain works part of the time ….See Re-Animator reference ), has a Michael Cera look alike with long hair (could also be a good thing…..but haven’t decided yet), some bad dialogue and some bad acting at times slows down the fast and furious pace the movie adapts once the zombies start attacking.
Overall I’d give this movie a 7 out 10, because despite some of its short comings it still manages to be a fun and gory zombie flick more in line with zombie comedy series Return of the Living Dead than serious tone of Romero’s Dead films . If you consider yourself a fan of zombie films then this film is definitely worth checking out and has some memorable scenes that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
Well that will do it for this review I hope you enjoyed it and as a side note this movie is currently not available through Netflix Instant Watch (Mailed DVD Only) but you can probably find online for anywhere between $4 dollars to $15/$20 Dollars, or at one of the national video rental chains.
Next week I will be reviewing another movie that is currently on Netflix Instant Watch and it will not be another zombie flick but rather from one of my favorite horror subgenres…..the slasher flick …. A little seen one at that involving a news crew, dumb teenagers getting killed and Robert Englund…..as one of the good guys! …..and again sorry for the long ass review.
