I bought Drive-In Cult Classics, an 8 movie collection (on 2 disks, I think...) at Best Buy a while back, but haven't watched any of the movies until now. I have watched 2 so far, one of which will be the next installment of the Horror Porn Review, the other I am going to review here.
"Pickup" is a movie with no name actors and actresses that centers around an RV trip and some hitchhikers. The film starts with Chuck taking a piss beside a state of the art motor home, which is essentially a tour bus. Carol and Maureen are sitting out in the field and hitch a ride with him. We find out that Chuck is driving the RV up through Florida to deliver it. The girls have some fun, smoke some weed, and flash cars, and it's all fun and games until they hit a stretch of road damaged by the hurricane and have to take a detour.
The funny thing is that we see the bus back on the road, driving through the night, and somehow they are lost in the swamp the next morning where the RV gets stuck.
What happens from here is mostly freakin' and flashbacks. Chuck and Carol get it on over and over, while Maureen (who is an avid Tarot card reader) keeps reliving the time that a priest molested her. And she sees a Senator who sullied her, and a clown who did more than make balloon animals for her.
Eventually, Chuck gets it on with Maureen while Carol sleeps, and they come back to find Carol dead (the only death in the movie). But then Maureen wakes up and they are back in the field, and we realize that the last 90 minutes has been a terrible vision (for us... not sure how Maureen feels).
All in all this is awful, and I'm sure the only reason people went to the drive-in was to screw around, which boosted box office sales for the movie... The acting was pretty bad, the music sounded like a bad acid trip, and apparently when you are lost the best thing to do is spin around in circles looking at tall trees until you become nauseous.
There was no suspense in them being lost, there was no survival element, there was no bloodshed, there was no killer on the lose, there was no ancient curse...
So if you are looking for a cult classic horror flick, keep looking. If you want a movie to play in the background that doesn't come off as flat out porn, but will start to get the ol' pump primed, have at this one.
