Clip #18 (which “fills in the blanks” of episode 22 of The Midnight Horror Show) was played on episode 26.
Summery: In this clip we compare audio clips of Ajax and Alex, I discuss in great detail how "Fill in the Blanks" is made, and I elaborate on Masters of Horror's "Homecoming" episode.

Welcome back, bitches, to FILL IN THE BLANKS. I’m Fray, the man of the hour. You probably won’t believe this but Danny and Lucas have outdone themselves this time around. They had a grand total of one Alzheimer’s moment, which means that this could very well be the shortest FILL IN THE BLANKS ever. Let’s find out as we listen to episode 22!
PLAY AJAX CLIP (33:28)
It’s funny cuz I was sort of thinking the same thing, Lucas. Also, don’t you think he sounds a little like Alex? Let’s compare shall we? This is Ajax. PLAY A CLIP OF HIM. And this is Alex. PLAY A CLIP OF HIM. Scary isn’t it? PAUSE Just kidding, Ajax. But seriously, don’t sweat it. Everything’s cool. And don’t forget…this is America dammit! It’s our right to treat people like dirt on the Internet! So fuck ‘em!

You know, I was wondering when this question was going to pop up. Well, this may take a few minutes, but here’s the big secret behind FILL IN THE BLANKS.
First, I sit or lay down somewhere with a notepad and pen and listen to the entire episode that I’m going to “fill in”. As I do this I write down notes on what to talk about. When a question or comment comes up I write it down along with the corresponding time so that I can find it easily when I enter the editing process.
Once that’s finished I take my handwritten notes, fire up my computer, and write them out more thoroughly in a Word document. This is when I create the reading script for BLANKS; coming up with all of the horrible jokes and filling in all of the answers to the questions and/or comments. If a question involves a movie (or whatever) I look it up on the Internet (usually wikipedia.org) and write my answer around the info that I’ve collected. I then copy the link (or links) where I found the info and paste them into the script to use later in the FILL IN THE BLANKS thread on the message board.
Next comes the fun part. I open Audacity (that’s a free audio recorder/editor if you’re wondering), take out my headphone mic and record the segment, reading straight from the script that I’ve written. This part usually takes no more than 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many fuck-ups D & L had in the episode. After recording the scripted piece I edit it. This takes longer b/c there are lots of mistakes to take out (“ums”, gaps, a phone ringing, etc.). Sometimes I have to re-read a line or two b/c it didn’t sound very interesting on the first take. I tend to get that b/c of my monotone voice.
Once it’s nice and polished I improve the sound quality as best I can and move on to the next stage of editing, which involves importing the Midnight Horror Show episode that I’m covering into the audio file and going through it piece by piece with the help of my script and cutting out the shit that I don’t need.
Once that’s done I try to match the audio up to mine so it sounds as even as possible. Next I add in all of the music and sound effects, which can take hours to find. (And it takes even longer if I have to find clips from past shows of other podcasts). When that’s finally done I combine all of the audio layers together into one, create an IP3 tag for it, and save it as an MP3, which I e-mail to Danny and Lucas.
This entire process can take anywhere from 8 hours to several days depending on the size of the script and what needs to be included in the segment. It’s a ton of work, but I love doing it, and I hope all of you are enjoying it. PAUSE And if you don’t you can kiss my ass. Thank you.

Huh. It’s funny that you mentioned that, Danny, b/c that’s exactly what I’m doing. For the past few weeks I’ve been working on a cool little segment that has nothing to do with FILL IN THE BLANKS or the review show that you want me to do. I can’t say anything more other than you can expect to receive it on October 1st and that it’s cool as hell.
PLAY MASTERS/HORROR CLIP (56:35) (NOTE: Maybe play theme music in bg.)
It was called “Homecoming” and was based on the short story "Death and Suffrage" by Dale Bailey. It was directed by Joe Dante (director of The Howling) and written by Sam Hamm (the script writer of the 1989 Batman film). The plot of the story was this: Terror and scandal grip the nation when the media discovers that the living dead have swayed the Presidential election. This adaptation blends zombie horror and contemporary political satire with chilling results.
I saw it and I really don’t recommend it.

And so ends this segment. See, I told you it was going to be short. Anyway, join me next time as I pray on bended knees for a repeat performance of astonishment from Danny and Lucas. PLAY END CLIP.
